Student Guidelines for DSPS Test Taking with Accommodations

DSPS test accommodations may be requested for your online and in-person classes beginning two weeks before the term starts. If you would like to use your DSPS accommodations, make sure your accommodation letters are sent and confirmed at the beginning of each term. The test format for your classes will likely vary from class to class.

Confirm proctoring needs with each one of your instructors and make the necessary arrangements for services accordingly. Available DSPS services and support this semester are described below for your reference; three (3) proctoring options exist:

    • Send your instructor a courtesy email to remind them about your DSPS test accommodations and iron out any details. We encourage you to check with your instructors to confirm test details such as:
      • What does the test/quiz consist of?
      • How will it be proctored?
      • What are the expected start/end times? Any other applicable deadlines?
      • What will be the class test duration? *This is important so you can verify whether or not the time has been extended for you the day of the test/quiz.

    • Check the ‘Time Limit’ and ‘Available’ details on Canvas BEFORE you attempt the test/quiz to make sure your extended time has been added properly. The extra time will not be displayed separately, rather it will be added to the total amount of time for the test.
For Example: If your class gets 80 minutes for a test, but you are approved for 1.5x extended time, your ‘Time Limit’ should read 120 minutes.
    • Additionally, make sure that the ‘Available’ time window will accommodate your extended time.
For Example:  If an 80 minute test is only made available from 8:00am - 9:20am (80 minutes), this is too restrictive and will not accommodate your required 120 minutes with extended time.
    • Lastly, if a test is made ‘Available’ over a few days, make sure you begin the test with enough time to complete it with your extended time in mind, before the cutoff date/time.

if time limit does not include extended time, or 'available' time is less than total test time, take screenshot and email instructor immediately

If the ‘Time Limit’ does not include extended time, or the ‘Available’ time is less than your total test time, take a screenshot or picture and email it to your instructor IMMEDIATELY and BEFORE you attempt the test. Make sure to include in your email communication.

This service is available the following days/times:

Note: If the other students’ test will not be supervised, you are entitled to take the test with accommodations unsupervised, as well.
  • You require scribe or reader accommodations.
  • Your instructor’s current proctoring method does not meet your disability based needs. If you need an exception, please make an appointment with a DSPS Counselor to determine the need for DSPS remote proctoring services and to make arrangements for the semester.
  • You or the instructor have a time conflict. If you have a time conflict, this must be verified by your instructor prior to contacting
